Try Your Luck at These Chinese New Year Makeup Looks
If you are planning your makeup looks for the upcoming visits and gatherings with your family and friends, how about creating a look inspired by the auspicious colours of this festive occasion? Colours most often associated with the Lunar New Year are red and gold, which is why our Lion City is awash with a sea of red and specks of gold during this time of the year.
Apart from red and gold, there are other auspicious colours as well that you can incorporate into your look. For the Year of the Pig, an earthy tone such as yellow is the way to go.
Here are some tips on how you can include these colours easily into your makeup look:
A bold red lip is the obvious choice if you wish to include the colour red in your makeup. Elegant and sultry, a red lip will instantly elevate your entire outfit and make you stand out among the crowd. When wearing a red lip, the most important thing is to ensure a flawless base as imperfections such as blemishes and redness tend to appear more obvious with a red lip. Therefore, choose a long-wearing foundation that will provide you with medium to full coverage. If you have oily skin or you dislike wearing heavy-textured foundations, opt for a lightweight base such as a tinted moisturiser or CC cream (the latter is especially good if you have a lot of redness on your skin as the CC cream will help to neutralise the redness). Then, follow up with a concealer to cover any imperfections such as blemishes or hyperpigmentation. Set everything with a fine powder to make sure your base stays in place. If you went a bit heavy-handed with your base and your skin is looking cakey, apply a setting spray or facial mist to put some dewiness back onto your skin. Another important note when wearing a red lip: go easy on the blush to prevent yourself from looking like you have tomatoes for cheeks. For a subtle and natural flush, dab on a smidge of cream blush in a peach or salmon-pink shade.
Fancy something more attention-grabbing in your makeup look? Then you should definitely go for gold. The easiest way to incorporate gold into your makeup is by creating a glittery gold eye look. When working with glitter shadows, we recommend leaving the application of your base at the end to prevent the fallout of the specks of glitter from messing up your foundation. To ensure your eyeshadow stays in place throughout your hours of visiting, apply a bit of primer. This will provide the eyeshadow with something to hold onto and preventing it from slipping and sliding all over the place. Another trick to prolong the staying power of your glitter eyeshadow is by applying it with a damp brush. This will not only help your eyeshadow stay in place, but also strengthen the intensity of the gold shade. Applying with a damp brush will also lessen the fallout from the glitter flecks, thus leaving you with less of a clean-up at the end of your hard makeup work.
A red lip is not the only way for you to stand out from the crowd this Chinese New Year. To add something unique to your makeup look, why not experiment with the colour yellow? This bright and sunny hue of yellow might deter you from incorporating it into your makeup look, but it will definitely set you apart from the typical red lips and glitter eyeshadows out there. For an easy and subtle way to add yellow into your look, try applying it as an eyeliner. The bit of yellow peeking out from your eyelids will make people give you a second look — in a good way! — without you looking like you are screaming “Look at me!” You can either go for a simple line around your eyelids or draw a cat-eye if you wish for something fancier. We recommend keeping the rest of your eye look bare to truly make the yellow eyeliner stand out. Just apply a wash of nude eyeshadow onto your eyelids to create a clean, blank canvas for the yellow eyeliner.
